Laotian accused of cheating casino allowed overseas travel (CNA)
A Laotian businessman accused of cheating the Marina Bay Sands casino of almost S$1.2 million has been granted permission to go back to Vientiane, Laos until the next court date. On Monday, Sengmanivong Soum, 50, asked the court through his lawyer, Shashi Nathan, for permission to go overseas to be with his family and attend to personal matters.

S.Korean Embassy in Laos Now Shelters 20 Defectors (Chosun)
The South Korean Embassy in Laos is now sheltering about 20 North Korean defectors, including recent arrivals. The embassy on June 4 moved 18 defectors from a safe house to the embassy for their protection. According to a diplomatic source, they include children, people with physical disabilities, and cancer patients. But most are in relatively good health.

Officials say they need a clear mechanism if they are to repatriate illegal foreign workers and traders as instructed by the government... Thailand to propose single-visa plan to Laos (Nation)
After launching a single tourist visa scheme with Cambodia last year, Thailand will now concentrate on coming to a similar agreement with Laos. Laos plans to produce 12,500 MW electricity by 2020 (VT/ANN)
Laos expects to see a big surge in electricity production over the next seven years with a number of hydropower plants currently under construction. According to a report from the Ministry of Energy and Mines' Energy Policy and Planning Department, installed capacity of Lao power plants will reach 12,500MW in 2020, up from 3,200MW at present.

An officer from Thong Lor Police in Bangkok accused of raping an 18-year-old woman from Laos while sidelining as taxi driver on April 21 surrendered yesterday afternoon, but denied any wrongdoing.
